Butterfly Soup is a free visual novel game that tells the story of a group of high school friends in Southern California who find themselves falling in love and coming of age against the backdrop of a sports story.
A visual novel about finding yourself
Although Butterfly Soup's main plot is ostensibly about sports, beneath that surface it's a story about young women falling in love with each other. Below that, it's even more fundamentally a story about discovering and fighting for who you really are. Like most visual novels, it doesn't offer a lot of gameplay options; you can make some important choices, but parts of the game just unfold without any real meaningful input. The visuals are simple but charming and characterful, with distinctive and well-realised characters against colourful backgrounds.
The best queer Asian baseball romance comedy you'll play this year
Butterfly Soup is a charming and compelling game that should definitely interest anyone who enjoys the visual novel genre. The dialogue is both genuinely affecting and, in places, hilarious. It has a relatively short run time (about 3 to 4 hours), but its production values are strong, especially for a free independent game.
